Galatians 5:1-4 Can you lose your salvation?

Bible Text: Galatians 5:1-4Series: Galatians |

[Gal 5:1 NKJV] Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

We have liberty in Christ and no longer do we stand on our own righteousness
The law is a yoke of slavery because if you uphold any part to affirm yourself as righteous, you become enslaved (responsible for the entire law).
James 1:25 NKJV] But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues [in it], and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

[Gal 5:2 NKJV] Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.

[Romans 2:25-29] For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter [of the Law] and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

[Gal 5:3 NKJV] And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law.

You can’t pick and choose which parts of the Law you will rely on.
If you believe you are made righteous by one point of the Law, you are held to the standards of the full law.

[Gal 5:4 NKJV] You have become estranged (separated, severed) from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

Can we lose our Salvation?

Calvinism: Says, no!
Arminianism Says, yes!
Free grace theology Says, no, you can pretty much become an apostate and reject Christ but still be saved.
Catholicism: Says, yes! If you commit a mortal sin. You may even spend time in purgatory.

Then who Gets Saved?

[John 3:16 NKJV] "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
[John 10:27-29 NKJV] "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. "My Father, who has given [them] to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of My Father's hand.
[Rom 8:38-39 NKJV] For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Who Gets Lost?

Heb 6:4-6 NKJV] For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

Let’s break down that passage:

For it is impossible for those who were…

once enlightened
and have tasted the heavenly gift
and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit
and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come
f they fall away, to renew them again to repentance
since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

What about the young man in 1 Corinthians. 5?

[1Co 5:4-5 NKJV] In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may (Tense: aorist, Voice: passive, Mood: subjunctive) be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
[1Co 5:9-13 NKJV] I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet [I] certainly [did] not [mean] with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not even to eat with such a person. For what [have] I [to do] with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person."

What about the ungodly?

[1Co 6:911 NKJV] Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

It all comes down the this:

Parable of the sower and the seed

Matthew 13-1-9
[Mat 13:18-20 NKJV] "Therefore hear the parable of the sower: "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand [it], then the wicked [one] comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
[Mat 13:20-21 NKJV] "But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; "yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
[Mat 13:22 NKJV] "Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
[Mat 13:23 NKJV] "But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands [it], who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

Take another look at Hebrews 6:4-8

[Heb 6:4-6 NKJV] For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.
[Heb 6:7-8 NKJV] For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

For those who are in Christ Jesus:

[Rom 8:38-39 NKJV] For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Who can be assured of eternal security?

[Rom 8:1-4 NKJV] [There is] therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God [did] by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
[Rom 8:5-7 NKJV] For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those [who live] according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded [is] death, but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace. Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
[Rom 8:8-9 NKJV] So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. ([Heb 11:6 NKJV]But without faith [it is] impossible to please [Him], for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and [that] He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.) But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
[Rom 8:10-11 NKJV] And if Christ [is] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin, but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Salvation is for those who walk in the Spirit not for the carnal minded. The carnal minded do not have the mind of Christ and therefore His Spirit is not within them..
